Well hello there felines. Welcome back to our 2nd installment of "Walkabout Wednesday"...
Having sprouted feets, my tunnel is out and about on new adventures...
And is touring the country of Australia, taking in the sights of the koalas...
Theese koalas live at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane...
Because of their low energy diet, koalas sleep around 19 hours a day to conserve energy...they give us kitties a run for our money!
Lone Pine is the largest koala sanctuary in the world with 130 koalas...
Lone Pine started in 1927 with a single pair of koalas named Jack and Jill...Sarah one of the koalas that lived here holds the Guinness World Record for living until age 23...captive koalas typically live between twelve and fifteen years...
The koalas live in different places around the Sanctuary according to their age and gender...
"Kindergarten" is where the "toddlers run amok" according to the Sanctuary! The koalas here are between one and two years of age...
The koalas at the Sanctuary can be held and hugged by the visitors...they are only held for a maximum of 30 minutes a day and have every third day off...
Here are two videos of the koalas in action...
Koalas only eat eucalyptus leaves and apparently eat only 50 of the 800 varieties that exist...The Sanctuary has four eucalypt plantations to feed the koalas and each day they cut three quarters of a tonne of leaf to feed the koalas in the Sanctuary...
Koalas have been listed as 'vulnerable to extinction' due to loss of habitat and loss of eucalyptus trees. The Australian Koala Foundation is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the conservation of the wild koala and its habitat.
Join us next Wednesday for our new series "Walkabout Wednesday".
Wow, your tunnel sure does know how to get around! What a wonderful place for it to visit. Thank goodness for Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, and for the koalas it is working to save.
